Unknown Mortal Orchestra is a Portland, Oregon-based New Zealand psychedelic rock band primarily composed of singer, guitarist, and songwriter Ruban Nielson, and bassist Jake Portrait. Nielson, formerly of The Mint Chicks, started the band in 2010. The band's first album was released in 2011 on Fat Possum Records; four subsequent studio albums have been released on Jagjaguwar, the most recent being IC-01 Hanoi (2018).[1]
History[edit]Inception[edit]
Singer and guitarist Ruban Nielson released the track 'Ffunny Ffrends' on his anonymous Bandcamp profile on 17 May 2010.[2] It was paired with no further information and notably no mention of who created it. Within a day, the song had received significant coverage from independent music blogs such as Pitchfork.[3][4] Through their reposting and attempts to hunt down the creator,[5] Nielson eventually claimed the track as Unknown Mortal Orchestra's.[6]
Unknown Mortal Orchestra[edit]
The band's debut self-titled album was released 21 June 2011 on Fat Possum Records. The album quickly received critical acclaim. Pitchfork gave the album an 8.1, describing that with 'an expert use of space rare for such a lo-fi record, UMO manages a unique immersive and psychedelic quality without relying on the usual array of bong-ripping effects.'[7]
In the spring of 2012, the band won the Taite Music Prize for the album.[8] Although the nominated Unknown Mortal Orchestra did not win Best Alternative Album, Nielson took home the title of Best Male Artist at the 47th annual Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards.
II[edit]
In September 2012, Unknown Mortal Orchestra announced that they had signed to Jagjaguwar and were working on their second full-length album. Unknown Mortal Orchestra's second album, II, was released on 5 February 2013.[9] The first single from the album, entitled 'Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark)', was first available as a 7' on their tour with Grizzly Bear.
II has received widespread critical acclaim. In November 2013 it won Best Alternative Album at the New Zealand Music Awards. II was nominated for the Taite Music Prize 2014, an annual music prize awarded for the best album from New Zealand. Clash Music gave the album a 9 out of 10, saying 'from opener 'From The Sun', which recalls George Harrison-psychedelia, to the tender Family Stone shuffle of the closing of 'Secret Xtians', 'II' displays both a glowing warmth in its production and a deft use of space that illuminate Nielson's superbly crafted compositions.'[10]Paste magazine called the album 'a modern, beat-heavy take on '60s psych, with plenty of hooks and fuzz to get you hooked and feeling fuzzy.'[11] NME praised Ruban's ability to turn his songs into 'works of warm, fuzzy beauty'.[12]
During the winter of 2012, Unknown Mortal Orchestra capitalized on the success of II and embarked on a world tour.[13] The tour started off with shows in Australia, and hometown shows in New Zealand, followed by several stops in Europe. The band then toured extensively throughout North America with opener Foxygen. In March 2013, Unknown Mortal Orchestra was named one of Fuse TV's 30 must-see artists at SXSW.[14] Unknown Mortal Orchestra consistently sold out shows in both the UK/Europe and in North America, and as a result of their success on the road they announced in early April that they would extend their tour through the end of 2013. That summer the band performed at a number of major European festivals, including Roskilde Festival, Pukkelpop and Lowlands.
On 25 February 2013, Unknown Mortal Orchestra made their American television debut, performing 'So Good At Being in Trouble” on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.[11]
On 29 October 2013, the band released an EP titled Blue Record.[15] It included three acoustic versions of songs taken from their previous album.
Multi-Love[edit]
On 5 February 2015, the band announced their third studio album, Multi-Love. Soon after, they released the title track as the first single, which was designated 'Best New Track' by Pitchfork.[16]Multi-Love was released on 26 May 2015. It was well received by critics. Rolling Stone commented that 'Multi-Love sees Nielson coloring outside the lines for a vibrant vision of connection' [17] and Pitchfork praised Nielson's ear for how something should sound and referred to the album as his 'most accomplished'.[18] Singles 'Multi-Love' and 'Can't Keep Checking My Phone' were both A-listed at BBC's 6 Music.[19]
Following the release, UMO embarked on a tour through the UK, Europe, the US and Canada, with many sold out dates. On August 12, UMO performed Multi-Love on Late Night with Seth Meyers.[20] On August 25 they performed 'Can't Keep Checking My Phone' on Conan. On 16 February 2016 the band performed on Last Call with Carson Daly. 'Can't Keep Checking My Phone' also appears in the association football video game FIFA 16.[21]
Sex & Food and IC-01 Hanoi[edit]
The band's fourth studio album, Sex & Food, was released on 6 April 2018, garnering a lot of praise from fans and critics.
In a review on Reflektor Magazine the following was said, 'The consistent thread through the UMO catalog remains strong; frontman Ruban Nielson spins a soulful vocal over a backdrop of melodically rich music and slick rhythm. This album builds on many of the synthesizers and sampled drum textures introduced on the previous breakout LP Multi-Love in 2015, but offers a different ride. The entire album was covertly previewed in SB-05, the 2017 installment of a Christmas day instrumental/ambient track released digitally for free. Upon first listen, Sex & Food reveals each song in its full form, a pleasant surprise.'[22] In July, the BBC Radio & 6Music named Sex & Food one of the best albums released in 2018.
Following the release, the band set out on a global tour with stops in the North America, Europe, UK, Asia, New Zealand and Australia, with many sold out dates. In September 2018, they announced the release of an instrumental album that originated from the sessions for Sex & Food, titled IC-01 Hanoi. It was released on 26 October 2018.[1]

For You Consideration #127: Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Multi-Love
Good afternoon everyone, and welcome to this week's For Your Consideration, the weekly series where we discuss albums that aren't on our Essentials chart, and maybe why they should be. This week, /u/ReconEG is back to discuss Unknown Mortal Orchestra's funky, polyamorous look at romance, Multi-Love.
Artist - Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Album - Multi-Love

Background by /u/ReconEG
Unknown Mortal Orchestra is an American and New Zealand band comprised of singer/guitarist Ruban Nielson, bassist Jake Portrait, keyboardist Quincy McCrary, and drummer Amber Baker, with Nielson serving as the only recording member of the band. Before starting UMO, Nielson was a member of the New Zealand-based Mint Chicks along with his brother, Kody. But after releasing a few records, tension grew between the brothers and after a trip to Portland, OR to visit his uncle, Ruban decided to permanently move to the U.S. with his wife Jenny and their newborn son Moe, effectively ending his attempt at a music career.
While working as an illustrator, Nielson began to tinker around with music again, writing songs just for fun after burning through his record collection, wanting to make 'the sort of odd and obscure psych-rock album that he couldn’t find.' He eventually decided to release one of these songs on Bandcamp, hoping to connect with other like-minded songwriters. So, in 2010, he put up the track 'Ffunny Ffrends' under the name Unknown Mortal Orchestra and the track blew up out of nowhere, being posted on numerous mp3-blogs and A&R reps from labels like XL, Domino, and Matador messaging the e-mail address on the Bandcamp page asking to hear more. Eventually, Nielson signed to Fat Possum, who released the self-titled debut album from Unknown Mortal Orchestra in 2011.
After getting together with a few friends from Portland, he formed a live band and hit the road around the world. During this extensive touring, Nielson became progressively more depressed and began to fall apart from rampant drug use, beginning to fall into the same traps his father did with his long-running addiction to alcohol and heroin. It was through his next album as Unknown Mortal Orchestra, 2013's II, that he began to put himself back together for his family. 2013 would prove to be an important year in Nielson's life, as it's where the story of his next album, Multi-Love would begin.
On a day off from touring, Nielson was exploring around Tokyo, eventually drifting into a random club. While at the club, he laid eyes upon an 18 year old girl (who we only know as Laura, according to an extensive interview with Pitchfork) who immediately grabbed his attention. After awkwardly exchanging eye contact and a wave, the two introduced themselves to each other and immediately hit it off, with the two exchanging contact info with each other. She eventually came to a UMO show in Melbourne, Australia later that year, attending the concert with someone she introduced to Nielson as her partner, effectively making clear to Nielson that his relationship with Laura was platonic, as he didn't want to make Laura uncomfortable or threatened.
But as they continued to talk online over the next few months, Jenny (Nielson's wife) began to take notice of their budding friendship, eventually starting her own friendship with Laura, which quickly grew more and more romantic as the two began exchanging written love letters to one another. Eventually, Jenny came to her husband with a plan: Laura was going to move in and the five would live together as a family. Nielson was already at work at the next UMO album at this time, and in his interview with Pitchfork, Nielson said, “I had two thoughts. The first was, ‘Holy shit, I’m fucked. I’m no match for this girl.’” The second was, “This is fate. This is what I’m supposed to be doing. If this is the end of my marriage, then this will be the album that documents it. There are a million ways for this to go wrong for my life—but there’s no way for this to go wrong for me artistically, as long as I keep my eyes open and I’m brave.”
So, on May 1st, 2014, Laura moved in with the Nielsons, and the chemistry between all three was immediate and the kids took quickly to Laura. But after their first few weeks together, the complications of this new relationship began to kick in. As a newcomer, Laura couldn't help but feel excluded when coming to terms with the relationship Nielson and Jenny had developed over a decade together. Jenny felt excluded sometimes as Laura and Nielson would do things on their own, like going out for a late night trip to Shari's or binge-watching a TV show together without her. And Nielson began to feel excluded as, along with Jenny and Laura discussing certain feminist issues together that Ruban knew wasn't his place to talk, the emotional weight of his situation began to sat in, taking to himself in his makeshift basement studio for days on end. 'Think about the two most serious relationships in your life so far, and then experiencing them simultaneously,” he told Pitchfork. “It makes you wonder: How much can a human being deal with emotionally? How well-adjusted are you?”
Eventually, Laura's tourist visa would expire in August and for six weeks, Ruban and Jenny pined for her as she worked on a project in the Peruvian rainforest. But eventually, she returned sometime in September, unannounced, with Nielson wanting to continue the relationship and, along his wife, opened up more about their situation, receiving mixed feelings from friends and family alike. Nielson's wife's mom reacted negatively about the relationship, particularly placing blame and anger at Nielson, while on the other hand, Nielson's father was unfazed by the news, coming to visit the family twice and recording all the horn parts on his son's new album.
Once Christmas passed in 2014, Laura's visa expired once again, and her attempts to renew it were denied, putting her return to the Nielson's on an indefinite hold. But also by this time, Nielson finished recording the album (now known as Multi-Love) and was having it mastered. But in the days before it was due to his label, Jagjaguwar, Nielson still didn't have an album cover he was happy with. So, Laura e-mailed a photo she took of Nielson's basement studio one night, altering the photo to place emphasis on a pink light which Nielson swears he needs in order to be his most creative.
Finally, on May 22, 2015, Multi-Love was released worldwide, receiving acclaim from the likes of Paste and The Guardian. Nielson once again toured extensively behind the album, including performances on Conan and Late Night with Seth Meyers. In 2016, he released the single 'First World Problem' and contributed a cover of 'Shakedown Street' to Day of the Dead, a tribute album to the Grateful Dead curated by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National. As of 2017, he's still at work at the follow-up to Multi-Love and played a few new songs live at 2017's Desert Daze festival in Joshua Tree, CA.
Review by /u/ReconEG
Love is fucked. Love is great. Love is, well it's love. It's a universal feeling that nearly everyone in their life has felt before, and so because of that, there's a lot of music about it. Yet, on Multi-Love, Ruban Nielson has found a new approach to writing about love, exploring the world of polygamous relationships after finding himself in one with his wife and a woman he met while on tour in Tokyo, Japan.
Nielson's dilemma is laid out in the album's intro, 'Multi-Love,' as he details the emotional turmoil his new love has brought him. 'Multi-love / Checked into my heart and trashed it like a hotel room,' he sings in the opening verse behind an electronic piano melody, further comparing this love to a monotheist losing their faith. The chaos of Nielson's love continues to fully realize in the next verse, with an epic drum fill kicking things into high gear with Nielson's signature guitar coming into the fray, guiding the rest of the instruments. He further compares himself to his lover's expired Vicodin, trying so hard to be her relief from pain and crumbling under the pressure. The chorus, backed by a crushing disco groove, further details this insanity: 'Multi-love's got me on my knee / We were one, then become three / Mama, what have you done to me? / I'm half crazy.' One of my favorite lines of the entire album comes from the third verse, as Nielson croons 'It's not that this song's about her / All songs are about her,' his love being so strong that not only are his own songs about her, all songs, not just his own, feel like they're about this love.
This intensity becomes too much for Nielson, as he falls back into his drug habits on the short but deviously fun 'Like Acid Rain.' However, the drugs can't distract him too long, as it isn't too difficult to pick up the implications of the line 'Does this mean you’ll never blow me again?' after name dropping multiple drugs throughout the verses. It's times like these that make Nielson reflect on simpler times as he details on the next track 'Ur Life One Night.'
The song opens up with a killer psychedelic synth line, before leading into some distorted drums and another tasty guitar line from Nielson. Once again, these grooves cover up some great pain, as he further details his relationship with Laura, revealing that the cracks in his newfound relationship were there from the beginning. While he felt that his love with 'Laura' was real, he felt it wasn't reciprocated, with Laura feeling only lust towards her relationship with Nielson, having more feelings for his wife.
Despite this knowledge, Nielson still longs for her love on 'Can't Keep Checking My Phone,' written when Laura was forced to leave the country for six weeks as he and his wife Jenny pined for her love while simultaneously trying to get things back to normal in their own life. The song, kicked off with a killer horn part done by Nielson's father, leads into another great funk groove as Nielson details his sadness of his situation, as while Jenny and Nielson are happy Laura is having fun working on a project in the Peruvian rainforest, they both just want her back at home with them. https://cutbela.weebly.com/cant-stop-the-feeling-free-download.html.
But, after spending most of the first half of the album fixating on Laura, Nielson turns his attention towards his wife on the moody 'Extreme Wealth and Casual Cruelty.' The song, on sound alone, sees Nielson at his lowest, singing in a gravelly tone throughout the track. However diving into the lyrics, things are a little less depressing. While he still has his wonders for why Jenny is with him, he knows that no matter what, they were meant to be together. Speaking with Pitchfork, Nielson said:
I used to always wonder, ‘Why is she with me?‘ I’m fun and caring but I’m not very responsible. I’m not a proper man. But then I started to understand: She chose me because being with me is an adventure, because I want to be swallowed up by life. She wanted to not know where her life was going, and I’m the best person for her to be with in that way. That’s why we did this.
Instrumentally, this song features some of the album's biggest highlights, with an amazing saxophone solo in the middle of the song and a colossal breakdown that fades out into 'The World Is Crowded,' another moody track that sees Nielson drained by Laura, with his delivery stunted and the groove consistent but slow. While he contemplates how this relationship could have turned out, thinking that in another life, she could have blown his brains out. Instead, in the real world, she just made him watch Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Nielson's emotional funk wares out into some actual funk in 'Stage Or Screen,' which sees him at his most frantic, and musically the closest to his first two albums under the Unknown Mortal Orchestra name. The pressure of the relationship continues to strain him, feeling like he can't be himself around the two women he loves. Comparing himself to an actor, but as the title says 'never for stage or screen.'
A common theme throughout the album is self-deprecation, with Nielson constantly doubting himself in the face of his situation and his lovers. This is highlighted most in the funky slow jam, 'Necessary Evil.' The song, most likely about Laura, sees Nielson struggling again with his feelings. In his mind, he just wants to be friends with this girl, but their connection is tough to deny, seeing himself as a burden, as he sings in the chorus:
Lovin' me could be your fatal flaw
Just hangin' in here trying to be your
Necessary evil, necessary evil
As the album follows a vague, partially chronological order, the album ends with the seemingly strange 'Puzzles,' detailing Nielson's anger that Laura was forced once again to leave the country and wouldn't be allowed back in indefinitely. The track starts with a light, ambient synth that sits in the background as field recordings of glass breaking play alongside cars flying by through the streets, before leading into a simple drum beat and acoustic guitars playing off each other, presenting an illusion of comfort, much like the time that Nielson, Jenny, and Laura spent together. However, that sense of safety quickly rears its ugly head as Nielson's electric guitar abruptly enters the fray sounding more ferocious than ever.
He displays his anger at America for forcing his love to leave prematurely, begging the country to please open up its doors, questioning why it always has to fight with 'the other,' that other being people of color, as he wonders why America needs to be a seemingly white ethnostate. While he have all of this knowledge of the world, as represented by Einstein's brain kept at Princeton University, we don't seem to be using this information for good, preferring to keep ourselves in a bubble instead of striving for true equality. This leads into an angry chorus, as Nielson repeatedly yells with authority 'I don’t want to solve your puzzles anymore' on the chorus, singing with some force that wasn't quite seen on the rest of the album. Nielson, himself, has had his own struggles with his identity. When discussing non-black artists exploring black music in their own works with Noisey, Nielson said:
'I'm in such an ambiguous space in terms of my racial identity that I really don't feel in that zone. I'm not a blue-eyed soul singer—for one, my eyes aren't blue. I'm just as much influenced by white British guys as I am by black Americans. If I'm appropriating black culture, I'm probably appropriating white culture, too.'
After this ferocity however, Nielson finds himself defeated, as evidenced by how the song fades out, turning into an instrumental track where Nielson picks up the acoustic guitar again as everything begins to slowly fade out of the mix until the song comes to a close, along with a strange, beautiful, and messy chapter of his life. When talking with The Guardian Download game ppsspp iso ukuran kecil gta. after the release of the album and Pitchfork's extensive profile on Nielson, he talked about how Laura felt about him now, being taken back by him for how open he was about the relationship and pissed about the media attention she suddenly received, as the album's booklet reveals her real name.
One of the first people Nielson confided to about his situation was his brother, Kody, who co-produced and handled percussion/synthesizer duties throughout the album. When Nielson recalled Kody's reaction to what his brother just told him and how it'd relate to his music, he said “‘Farming the experience for lyrical content is a very Ruban thing to do—you would do something crazy like that.’” It leads into a very complicated topic, was Nielson's love for Laura genuine, or was willingness to enter the polygamous relationship mostly inspired by the music that could come from it, whether it ended happily or in complete heartbreak?
The answer isn't clear, and it's what makes Multi-Love such a compelling album. While taking sounds from 60's psych rock and 70's rock, he dispels the era of 'free love' and wraps it around its head, showing that polygamy isn't just getting to bang two girls at the same time. As Nielson stated in his interview with Pitchfork, 'Think about the two most serious relationships in your life so far, and then experiencing them simultaneously. It makes you wonder: How much can a human being deal with emotionally? How well-adjusted are you?”
Love isn't easy, whether it'd be in a monogamous relationship, a polygamous one, or even a platonic one. It's something that can bring you life's greatest joys, but can also leave you at your most devastated. But most importantly no matter what, love makes you feel. It reminds you that you're a human being, with complexities and wild, rushing thoughts. The final lesson you should get out of love, especially when it ends, is that it's not the end of you. It's a battle for sure, as Nielson displays throughout the album with rapidly changing insight for how his relationship is going. It's easy to get lost in love, but you can never, ever forget your way out. Don't go into love with an escape route in mind, as you're setting yourself up for failure. But when it ends, just make sure you can keep your head afloat, as it's waves are brooding and intense. Despite what you might tell yourself, you'll eventually find your way back to shore. And before you know it, you'll find yourself on the journey once again.
